Sierra National Forest

Yosemite National Park - USA Travel DestinationsThe Sierra National Forest is a federally managed region of forests in central California which extends along the western slope of the Sierra Nevada. It is nestled between Yosemite National Park to the north, Inyo National Forest to the north east and Kings Canyon National Park to the south east. The Sierra has 11 reservoirs, 528,000 acres of designated wilderness, over 60 campgrounds, two wild and scenic rivers and 1,100 miles of trails. All of this makes the Sierra National Forest an ideal destination for an RV rental holiday.

It was established in 1905 from an earlier forest reserve and covers over 1.3 million acres of forest which encompasses groves of giant sequoias as well as numerous wilderness areas. From 900ft at its lowest point to nearly 14,000ft at its peak the vegetation changes quite dramatically with the changing elevation.

The majority of attractions in the forest are easily accessible to visitors in one of our RV rentals. The three major access routes are State Highway 41, State Highway 140 accessing the northern half of the Forest, and State Highway 168 accessing the southern half.

Boating

Fans of water based recreation are well catered for with a range of bodies of water to suit just about any type of activity you can think of. The Sierra National Forest provides numerous opportunities for canoeing, water skiing, sailing, fishing, windsurfing, whitewater rafting, kayaking, and house boating. Camper rental travelers who wish to remain dry can still enjoy a self catered picnic on the banks and enjoy the beautiful scenery of the Forest.

Some of the lakes are more popular than others, but if you seek solitude or peace and quiet it will pay to travel further into the forest. Because the forest is so vast there is always a quiet corner somewhere for you to enjoy.

Camping

Camping is one of the main draw cards of the forest. The campgrounds are located in a variety of settings and elevations meaning you can enjoy a variety of forest environments within the one RV rental holiday. Many campgrounds allow you the opportunity to pick your own spot in their dispersed camping area.

Many forest campgrounds will not accommodate oversized motorhomes or RV rentals. Our camper rental customers should note that there are no hook ups at forest campgrounds however there are a range of privately operated campgrounds which do.

As usual when camping in a forest area consideration must be given to the presence of bears and other forest creatures. Always lock your food and other items away before you leave your campsite. Our lockable campervans provide the ideal way to ensure all of your provisions are secure.

Fishing and Hunting

The Sierra National Forest has an excellent range of stream and lake fishing however fishing regulations do apply and visitors should be aware of these before casting off. Fishing in lakes and reservoirs is permitted all year round however fresh water stream fishing is only open from late April to mid November.

The forest waterways are teeming with aquatic life and will provide an abundance of fresh fish for your enjoyment. Our camper rental customers enjoy the convenience of having access to the fully equipped kitchen facilities onboard most of our rental vehicles.

If you are a keen angler then it may interest you to know that Bass Lake, a mid level elevation lake with no catch limits, is teeming with over 16 different species of fish. Rainbow trout, bass and kokanne salmon are among the popular catches. Many of the other higher elevation lakes have less variety of fish species and often your catch is limited to 5.
