We know from experience that camper rental holiday makers are looking for an intimate and yet inspiring travel experience. What better place to be inspired than the Grand Canyon.

The Grand Canyon has many features which draw tourists from many countries, over four million people visit this corner of Arizona every year. The experience can be wasted if you don't have a plan. This article explains some of the attractions of the Grand Canyon. Hopefully it will inspire you to hire a campervan and take your next holiday there.

THINGS TO DO

The grand canyon is a stunning place to visit. While you might not want to leave the comfort of your campervan rental and venture out from the campsite it's worth the effort. Take a walk along any one of the rim trails and hiking tracks. Head west to find Hermit's Rest, a 1914 stone building named after a 19th-century French-Canadian prospector who had a roughly built homestead in the area. These days, it's a gift shop and snack bar.

The mule rides, while famous are not for everybody. The animals walk along narrow ledges carved into the canyon wall and provide a look back into time when life was less complicated but a lot more daunting. After completing the mule ride we recommend retreating to your campervan rental vehicle for some well earned rest and relaxation.

Many travelers choose to explore the area's cultural history. One such drawcard is the Wupatki Pueblo. This is accessible by a self guided trail that starts at the visitor centre and takes 45 minutes to complete. About 800 years ago Wupatki was the largest pueblo around. It was a thriving home base for a variety of local peoples. The remains of 100 rooms can still be found today, including communal areas where daily life would have taken place.

The historic Desert View Watchtower, a rest area and gift shop, provides a stunning view of the Painted Desert, a large area of open land where the layers of rock have been exposed over the years by erosion to reveal layers of brightly colored mineral deposits, that glow violet, red and gold.

For nature lovers travelling along the road from the South Rim to Flagstaff you will find the Kendrick Park wildlife trail. A wide variety of wildlife are relatively easy to see, both large and small forest creatures are found in abundance. The Grand Canyon is also home to scorpions, tarantulas, and rattlesnakes, however these creatures are mostly confined to the canyon itself.

CAMPER FRIENDLY CAMPING GROUNDS

There are two campsites on the South Rim which allow for overnight Campervan stays. The Mather Campground requires bookings in advance during peak season. The other site, Desert View Campground operates on a first come first served basis all year round. The campground is usually full by early afternoon during the busy summer months. Ensure you arrive early with your campervan hire vehicle to avoid disappointment.

These are both dry sites, meaning no utility, water, or sewer hookups. Showers are only available at the Mather Campground.
As you can see, many of the modern conveniences we provide in our camper rentals as standard are not provided at the campgrounds. You will be the envy of every other camper.

There is a limit of 7 days imposed upon recreational vehicles and both campsites have a strict limit of 30 foot maximum on all campervans and RVs. Please check with the dimensions of your vehicle before arriving.

From the comfort of your very own camper rental vehicle the lack of dining options in the area will not present a problem. A amply sized fridge/freezer, air conditioned throughout with convenient cooking equipment, it will seem like you have all the comforts of home.
